“live, repair, recycle” – into the future with freistil ROLF BENZ
Nagold. freistil ROLF BENZ is celebrating the anniversary and innovative spirit of ROLF BENZ. The community brand is presenting its visionary ECHT sofa system for the umbrella brand’s 60th anniversary. The latest development from the Nagold-based company was created focussing on the long-term objective of recyclability.
What is sustainable upholstered furniture and what will it look like in the future? ECHT was designed with this question in mind. The sofa is a completely new approach in terms of construction, selection of materials and service. Every aspect has been critically examined and transparently communicated, from the cover to the cushioning material, from the modularity of the furniture to sorting waste according to material type, and from shorter transport routes to the repeat order service.
A sofa for New Premium
The path to recyclability is an ongoing process. Entirely in keeping with this development, freistil ROLF BENZ is implementing its vision of high-quality designer upholstered furniture and marking its position as a pioneer in the New Premium segment.
The key terms here are “live, repair, recycle” and the entire design of the freistil ECHT sofa is aligned with these. The objective here is to achieve a product life cycle that is as long as possible due to its versatility, a long product lifetime due to its reparability, and industrial recyclability by separating waste according to material type.
Whether you’re moving house, changing your house mates or adapting to a new lifestyle, ECHT ensures that your sofa can be used for a long time.
The modular sofa system comprises two seating elements in total and a narrow and a wider side element. Three seat cushions, two wide backrests and a narrow one create eleven changeable combinations. The elements can be freely combined with a leg construction that was specially designed in-house.
It goes without saying that “live” also stands for noticeably high-quality materials, unique comfort and timeless design. Longevity “Made in the Black Forest”, as it were.
“Repair”: Cleanability and reparability
All components of the freistil ECHT sofa, from its wooden frame to the upholstery, are delivered as a flat pack and are built using conventional tools either by the customers themselves or as part of a service provided by the dealer.
The covers can be removed, washed and re-ordered as required to cope with traces of daily life, small-scale catastrophes or changes in style. Any other part of the sofa can also be re-ordered from the re-ordering service for the next ten years at least. freistil ROLF BENZ accompanies customers on their journey even during the construction of the furniture.
“Recycle”: An industrial closed loop as the objective
People who want to live sustainably also appreciate the fact that all parts of the ECHT sofa can be sorted by material. The covers and fleece materials are made of recyclable material or have been recycled themselves.
The foam parts of the freistil ECHT sofa consist of 100% polyurethane. They were produced in accordance with BASF’s biomass balance approach. This means that renewable raw materials made from biomass is used in its production. By using the foam, freistil ROLF BENZ is helping to reduce dependency on fossil raw materials.
Producers of the foam are currently looking into how the material can be recycled for use in an equivalent product, instead of being downcycled into a lower-value material as is currently the case.
Shorter delivery routes with an optimal drop shipment
Delivery routes affect a product’s CO2 footprint. freistil ROLF BENZ is using flat packs to reduce volumes and, if required, can have the furniture delivered directly to the user for a transport that is economically and ecologically sound.
